About Me

Served in Thailand as a Plant Operator with 54 (FARELF) Sp Sqn RE for a total of 22 months serving under command, CRE Wks Crown, 34 Fd Sqn, 59 Fd Sqn RE, 11 Sqn RE and 54 (FARELF) Sp Sqn RE who completed the Post Crown Force road project, departing from Bangkok on LSL Sir Galahad, 1 May 1968.  During my time on the Airfield with CRE Wks Crown and 34 Fd Sqn I was operating one of the Finishers as part of the SGME train laying concrete.  On the road I operated D8h dozer and Aveling Austen Grader.  majority of my time spent in, "Skid Row" Hong Khong Camp, where I drank copious amounts of beer and had a great time.  ( Apart from the Field Punishment - but that's another story ! )  46 years later I'm still training and assessing plant operators throughout the UK. 2013 will see me having completed 50 years on plant when I might think about retirement.

About Me

Just a little about me. Joined up in the Army Apprentice School Arborfield in 1963 (63C) B coy. Nick name ( I think we all had one) Stumpy!! Could be something to do with my height.

First posting was to British North Borneo, Kuching with the 99 Brigade of Gurkhas LAD REME. Discovered I was really partial to Tiger beer. End of confrontation (28 days after I got there, thus no medal) saw us shipping out to Singapore, Nee Soon Barracks. Tiger Beer and night time entertainment became even more appealing.

Volounteered for Thailand, Op Crown..now that was the jewel in the crown as far as postings in the far east were concerened. Talk about roughing it, but what an experience. One I will never forget for many reasons that cant be told here.

UK, Bahrain, Canada, Germany, Northern Ireland and finally UK and into Civvy street.

Now retired and living a life of leisure in sunny Dorset

I wonder if any of you might remember me.

About Me

Joined REME early 1966. On completion of training as VM C, was posted to Post Crown Wksp early 1967 as a Cfn.  At the time I would have recognised a bulldozer 2 out of 3 times and now had to fix them.I didn't know it at the time but it was the most memorable of my many postings over a career spanning 42 yrs service. I retired in Aug 2008 as the oldest Major in NATO!

I don't have any photos, but the ones on this site bring back happy memories of Mekon old Thai whiskey the noise of heavy rain on the tin roofed bashers. I remember going to the US base at Ubon and seeing Bob Hope and Rachel Welsh on their equivalent of a CES show.

I also remember the Harry Secombe and Anita Harris CSE show.

I sailed  to Singapore  on the RFA Sir Gallagher from Bangkok when Post Crown closed. I was posted to FARELF Engineer Park on Ayer Raja road to newly formed C Vehicle Wksp and was  confronted with all the sorry plant from Crown!

About Me

Joined Op Crown in 1964 to 1965, one of the Gunners attached to the transport corps.

"I was in this incident attached at the time to the RCT as they became whilst we were there. The Scammel we were in was about two vehicles behind on route to Ubon. I will always remember the local people coming along with sweet potatoes and water etc even though we had effectively shut their only road down!! Thats a D8 on it's back by the way!!I remembered another little thing from the Op. A Scots Engineer and myself got a little group going and we actually broadcast on 'Op Crowns' own radio station, we played a few Beatles numbers!! Do you remember that? There were about 5 or 6 of us Gunners there at that time, all driving."
